The Scottish Thistle, Beautifully Bold and Resilient
It has been an emblem of Scotland that dates back to ancient times and was largely adopted by the Reformed Covenanters and was placed in their flags and banners.
It is a humble weed that might seem like an odd symbolic choice but it could not have been better chosen.
It is a sign of rebellion against tyranny and that we as the people of God have the right to live freely according to the precepts of God’s law. It is bold and resilient like the kingdom of God which consist of both church and state. The Kingdom of God will not be crushed. It cannot burn and it cannot be destroyed. It will continue to grow until the Earth is full of the knowledge of the Lord and all nations will submit themselves to the Lord Yahovah on High.
It is the hope of the day that will begin to dawn. The first rays of the millennial morning streaming over the mountains of future years. Our Redeemer is on his march, and the brightness of light is before him. All kings shall bow down before him: all nations shall serve him.
Like the simple and lowly Thistle the kingdom of God will grow like a weed and spread until it covers the Earth from shore to shore and to every isle.
This plant has a very stubborn and invasive root system, and removing the entire plant from a piece of ground is not an easy task. Anyone who’s actually encountered the Thistle will tell you that it ‘grows like a weed’, and that’s the truth!
It is soft and beautiful much like the Kingdom of God but it is also very dangerous.
When you realize that, in spite of the soft downy flowers, the bulk of this plant is covered in extremely sharp thorns, you can imagine just how impressive (and dangerous) it can be.
The Thistle holds forth these physical attributes –
1) The delicately beautiful flower heads,
2) The viciously sharp thorns,
3) It resist tyrannical uprooters.
4) It’s stubborn and tenacious grip on the land,
5) It’s defiant ability to flourish in spite of efforts to remove it
It is a symbol of dissent and resistance against all that stands against God and His Anointed One.
It is a symbol and battle cry that stands against oppression, unrighteousness, injustice (as defined by God’s law) and against tyranny where ever it is and however it takes shape.
I believe this plant makes the perfect Cameronian Covenanter Emblem which stands forth in front of the flames since it cannot be burned or crush but will be victorious in the end. Everything else will burn but the Kingdom of God will stands forever. Like the Phoenix that rises from the fire and ash, so too will the Kingdom of God.
“ Let God arise, let his enemies be scattered: let them also that hate him flee before him. As smoke is driven away, so drive them away: as wax melteth before the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God. But let the righteous be glad; let them rejoice before God: yea, let them exceedingly rejoice.” (Psalm 68:1-3)
